LEAKY GUT SUPPORT

On November 17, 1997, Newsweek magazine did a feature article on "Leaky guts and disease". They pointed out that damage to the intestinal lining could, "spring a leak", and that glutamine is an amino acid which plays a role in maintaining gut integrity. The article emphasizes a long-time concern of alternative practitioners, and that is that the barrier of the gut, which is meant to prevent harmful organisms from gaining entry into the system, can become a gateway to unhealthy situations when holes develop in the lining. Tight junctions in between intestinal cells loosen, and unwanted substances like bacteria and parasites can invade. If food is incompletely digested, macromolecules can pass through the damaged barrier and activate the immmune system. Environmental insults, drugs, alcohol and especially non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) can batter down the barrier. NSAIDS, such as ibuprofen and aspirin inhibit mucus-producing prostaglandins, wearing away at the natural protective lining our body produces. Glutamine is the major intestinal fuel for these rapidly proliferating cells. Glutamine is being researched for its role in immune support, and one focus of current interest has centered on its pending inclusion in parenteral nutrition solutions. N-acetyl glucosamine is an important supporting nutrient for the extracellular matrix encompassing the intestinal epithelial cells. Lactobacillus strains can ensure a healthy population of beneficial flora, antioxidants such as vitamins C and E, and lipoic acid can fight radicals, soothing herbs such as deglycyrrhized licorice and slippery elm support healthy cells, and phytochemically active herbs such as ginkgo biloba and cat's claw help maintain proper circulation and immune function. In a society of ever-increasing toxic insults, it is becoming more and more important to pay attention to supporting a natural barrier to invasion.
