| ANTIOXIDANT SUPPORT Free radicals are highly reactive molecules which batter our cells, causing damage and destruction. It is estimated that free radicals attack our DNA on the average of 10,000 times a day. Free radicals can result in major cell dysfunction and disease. It is important to have adequate levels of antioxidants at all times to protect our cells. Some vitamin antioxidants like vitamin C work to combat aqueous (water-based) free radicals, while vitamin E works to combat lipid (fat-based) radicals. Beta-carotene works in areas of low oxygen tension. N-acetyl-cysteine and taurine are antioxidants traditionally chosen to support liver function. Selenium, zinc, manganese and copper are needed for the different antioxidant enzymes, such as glutathione peroxidase, catalase, and superoxide dismutase. Some phytochemicals also possess the ability to quench free radicals, such as quercitin and ginkgo biloba.
