| FEMALE SUPPORT An amazing discovery of certain chemicals in plants called, "phytoestrogens" has been revolutionary. These natural plant substances are currently being researched for their properties, which include a weak, estrogenic effect on the body. Since the ability to bind to estrogen receptors also supports the body during times of excess estrogen, phytoestrogens are regarded as "adaptogens" which optimize estrogen homeostasis. Natural sources of phytoestrogens include soy foods, wild yam, raspberry leaf, licorice and dong quai. Avoidance of factors which aggravate premenstrual symptoms is usually advised to women experiencing difficulties. These factors include caffeine, chocolate, alcohol, sugar, fat and stress, which interestingly enough all interfere with magnesium absorption and/or retention (magnesium is a cofactor in metabolizing estrogen). Exercise is helpful in raising endorphin activity, which may be impaired by the excess estrogen present during PMS. When a woman enters the natural cycle of menopause, there are concerns about the increased risk for osteoporosis, and there is also concern about the increased risk for breast cancer that accompanies the synthetic replacement of the estrogen hormone. Nutritional support is important for the woman who wants to maintain an optimal status of nutritional defense during this time. Vital nutrients such as calcium, magnesium and vitamin E play a role in the menopause and should not be overlooked.
